POPEYE ON THE BIG SCREEN

The most popular sailor, who gains extraordinary power by eating spinach, is heading back to the big screen in 3D to delight us with his new adventures.

Sony Pictures has announced that they will be bringing to the big screen of our cinemas a computer animated version in 3D of the adventures of the world’s most famous sailor. This new version will have Avi Arad as producer (Spiderman, The incredible Hulk...).

The storyline will feature Popeye’s adventures and misadventures with his inseparable friends: Olive Oyl, Bluto, Swee’Pea... The plot of the film will cover the themes of love, friendship and greed, with special emphasis on human strengths and weaknesses.

Popeye was created by Elzie Selgar and appeared for the first time in 1929 in a comic strip in the already famous “Thimble Theater”, soon to become the main character of such comic strip and to appear later on on a series of animated shorts, which has been the longest-running series of animated speaking shorts ever.

The last time the spinach loving hero was on the big screen was in 1980 starring Robin Williams in a live-action film directed by Robert Altman. Currently, negotiations with Mike Jones are under way to write the adaptation for this new version in 3D.
